Opening a Swiss bank account as a new arrival

After you've registered at the Gemeinde, you can open a Swiss private (Privatkonto) and savings (Sparkonto) account with any bank using your passport and registration confirmation. Neobanks like Neon, Yuh or Zak open in 5-10 minutes via app; cantonal and big banks (UBS, ZKB, Raiffeisen) take 1-2 weeks but offer mortgages and full services later on.

Overview

The first Swiss account is just for salary, rent and daily spending. You will likely add more later (mortgage relationship, pillar 3a, brokerage). Start simple: cost matters more than brand at this stage.

Choosing and opening your first account

  1. 1

Pick the right type for the moment

A neobank (Neon, Yuh, Zak) costs CHF 0-2/month and gives you a Swiss IBAN, Maestro/Debit Mastercard and TWINT in minutes. A traditional bank (UBS, CS, Raiffeisen, your cantonal bank) charges CHF 5-12/month but is essential for later mortgage and pension relationships.

  2. 2

    Documents required

Passport, registration confirmation from the Gemeinde (or permit card), Swiss address. Some banks also ask for an employment contract or proof of source of funds for higher initial deposits.

  3. 3

    Open online where possible

Neobanks finish onboarding via video ID. UBS, CS and most cantonal banks now also offer digital onboarding for residents.

  4. 4

Add a savings account in parallel

Use a Sparkonto for the emergency buffer (3-6 months of expenses). Interest is modest (0.5-1.0% as of 2025) but it keeps money separate from daily spending.

  5. 5

Set up salary, rent and TWINT

Hand your new IBAN to HR, set up the LSV/eBill direct debit for rent and utilities, download TWINT - the dominant Swiss peer-to-peer payment app.

  6. 6

Plan the pillar 3a and investment account separately

Don't bundle 3a or your ETF brokerage into your first daily-banking choice - product-by-product selection (VIAC, finpension, Saxo, IBKR) usually beats the bank's in-house option.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open a Swiss bank account before arriving?+

Some private banks accept pre-arrival opening for high-net-worth clients. For everyday banking, you'll need a Swiss address - so plan to open in week 1 or 2 after registration.

Do US citizens have trouble opening Swiss bank accounts?+

Yes - many Swiss banks refuse US persons due to FATCA reporting costs. Confirmed US-friendly options include UBS, Cornèr Bank's BX Swiss/Yuh, Interactive Brokers (for investing) and a small number of cantonal banks.

What's the difference between Privatkonto and Sparkonto?+

Privatkonto (current account) is for daily spending and salary - low/zero interest. Sparkonto (savings) pays slightly more interest but limits withdrawals (often CHF 50,000/year without notice).

Is TWINT important?+

Yes - TWINT is Switzerland's universal mobile payment app, used for restaurant tips, parking, splitting bills and online checkout. Pick a bank that supports it (most do).
